Wheee!

I'm going to Las Vegas until Wed. That should be fun. Then, we drive from Vegas back to SD and directly to the airport so I can fly to MIT for preview weekend. Then I get back sort of late on Sunday. Probably won't post anything this week. On Monday, I'll probably be really tired and probably jet-lagged. But it should be worth it.

wuj out.

Finally able to get on the NCAL site to check on academic team standings.

Apparently, I was wrong. RB beat Poway. Thus only two undefeated teams were RBV and SDA. RBV's division plays more games (thus they had more wins). That's why SDA is second seed. Poway would be the other divisional first place team. Then, second places. Carlsbad from our division and Escondido from North. However three way tie for second in Inland. There's three places left. They couldn't just use all three from Inland to fill the remaining spaces (1/2 teams would be from on division). So, my theory is that they used those three teams along with thirds from other two division (thats us and fallbrook) in a drawing and Mrs. Swovelin picked us out. Another possibility: they randomly chose the second place from inland then used the other two teams, TP and fallboork for wildcard drawing.

JV was good. They were the only undefeated team in all three divisions of JV. They should probably win easily. Probably.

Frosh should have been undefeated. They have a round-robin to see which of the three first place teams from Coast division is going to be first place. Since their loss was by one question and they weren't playing well that game, frosh should probably make playoff as well.

Should be the return of the times when we had all three teams in the playoffs. Hope it is a return of the time(s?) when all three teams won. Torrey Pines didn't get worse. Other teams just got better.

battle of the band rocked today (for the most part).

Finger was the funniest thing that ever happened. hope vic doesnt get in trouble for the guitar thing. that was really cool though. too bad the rest of the school missed the humor of what was happening. what happened to the whole principle behind Finger though about using the finger to play. oh well, it was cool anyway.

props to remo, carlo, vic, and john

why is this jounral messed up. why why why.
its not updating correctly or something, at least it doesnt appear so on my computer. i think it might just be messed up on my machine. its not letting me update the html for my site (added a bunch of links that arent showing up).

blah! i had something i wanted to post but i cant think of it now.
its almost spring break. after comp sci (Per. 4, the most boring pointless class in the world), i get to go home. yay!

wow, i havent gone to TKEP for a long time. i fell 150 rank! the 1MD club is now 100. wow that's a lot. and theres close to 15000 users.

another note on academic team:

we got wild card (i predicted this). however, we play SDA in the first round. we can beat them tho. we can beat any team in san diego. its just a matter of speed and accuracy (duh! If you score more, you win. that was for you mr. p). last time we played them, they kept buzzing in really early and guessing the answer correctly. they sucked at bonuses tho. if we could get some toss ups in, we should be fine. also, from the USC tourney on saturday, i tied SDA's top scorer from the match (we had exactly the same powers, toss ups, and negs). I have a feeling we did better than them on bonuses. that win was probably a fluke. they just had a really good night and we had a bad night. we might have a problem when we play them though. the starters might get nervous and slow because they know that we need to win to go on (this is a problem because i dont think that mr. p will want to us people from the bench, even though he should). after that, poway should be our hardest opponents and we should be able to handle everyone else.

Varsity playoffs: Carlsbad High School. Tuesday, April 16. 6:00pm (not sure on the time yet)

johnz452 (8:10:57 PM): *John, lol

jadewarrior1984 (8:13:01 PM): jane eyre

dan likes to post little stories about when other people say/do stupid stuff. (read his "i love victor" crap.) here's a taste of his own medicine.

Today during academic team practice, we got the question: "What is the number of molecules in a mole of something?" Dan wins the buzzer race and says correctly, "Avagadro's number." About 10 minutes later, Mrs. Dean reads "Who's law states that the same amount of a gas at the same..." I buzz in. No one expects me to get it. However, I answer "Avagadro." Dan says, "NO!" Mrs. Dean says, "No, that's right." Haha. Eat that regular chem taker. Avagadro is famous for more than one thing in chemistry.

i think ive been reading to many webcomics and blogs lately. everytime i finish getting updated on a webcomic by reading all previous comics from like several years, i feel sort of bored and start on another one. then i cant wait until the next installment of each comic comes out.

Academic team tournament was fun. A bunch of JV teamers came along. We had three teams. My team (TP-B) sucked, but at least I got to captain. We only won 3 out of 10 matches. But TP-A and TP-C did well. Personally, I think I was pretty good. I got about 4-5 powers and got about 3-4 questions per match. And we beat Capostrano Valley (team with the top two scorers of the tourney). We were tied at the half, right away, I got the first two questions and then they got nervous and kept buzzing in early and missing, making it easy for us the get the question on second read. It rocked. Too bad someone on Los Alamitas had a seizure. They withdrew there three teams and Edison (undefeated) skipped the playoffs. Our win over Capo Valley allowed TP-C (in our division) to skip into second place and make finals. TP-A rocked and made finals all by themselves in the other division. Capo Valley made finals due to Edison's leaving and beat TP-C in round of eight. I got switched onto TP-A and captained the first round. We beat Santa Monica A, was a close game. Then, semi-finals, Capo Valley wouldn't let us use subs from other teams (TP-B and TP-C). Then, they killed us (out scored by ratio of 6-1). Didn't stay to see who won finals (Capo Valley vs. San Dieguito Academy) (since when did San Dieguito go to tourneys as well?).

Bad. We lost again in Academic League. We should have won. SDA really beat us. They were much better than us that day. However, Carlsbad was not. They were not better. We lost by one question again. And we shouldn't have.

First of all, I was tired once again. For the first time in the past two weeks, I didn't get enough sleep. It's fine if you haven't slept enough for many days straight, but going from normal to little really knocks you out. Next, I buzz in with the right answer and the stupid guy doing names calls "Torrey Pines..." And pauses. To bad my Academic Team reflexes kicked in and said the answer since he should have called my name by then. That really sucked, he paused, it wasn't completely my fault. That screwed me up for the rest of the questions. Claire buzzed me out on a few that I knew the anwers to but she got wrong. Then, I get taken out and, at the end of the match, there's a binomial expansion question. Binomial Expansion. I write Pascal's Triange on my scratch paper every time. I would have gotten it. Claire missed it. If we had gotten it, we would have won. Damn it. We probably could have beaten all the teams we played this year. Stupid mistakes.

Guess we'll just have to see if we get the wild card. And, there's always tournaments and Chicago. If fact, tourney tomorrow, wonder how we'll do.

Friday, March 15, 2002

I just checked the standings on the NCAL site.
It is very confusing.

Here is my report:

In the Inland division, there is a three way tie for second place between Mt. Carmel, Rancho Bernardo, and Orange Glen (2 win, 2 loss for each). Poway is undefeated. RB plays Poway (RB likely to lose). Orange Glen and Mt. Carmel should win against the two schools they are playing. Orange Glen killed Mt. Carmel 100 to 50. This means that its likely that RB does not make play offs. My guess is that Poway (sure in) and Orange Glen make playoffs.

North Division is pretty straight forward. RBV is undefeated and have a bye next week. However, the two teams tied for second will probably both win (Escondido won in head to head though). RBV is a definitly in the playoffs and Escondido should probably make the playoffs.

In our division, we need to beat Carlsbad to ensure playoffs (I said ensure, see last paragraph). This will mean that we are second place with SDA being 1st. If we had won last night but lost to Carlsbad, it would be a three way tie for first. So, if we were going to lose one game, SDA would be the game to lose. SDA is a sure in and we should be second.

Mt. Carmel, Fallbrook and either Carlsbad or TP (whichever team loses next week) have the best chance of making wildcard (these are the probable 3rd place teams). Fallbrook is likely to win and will have a win % of 66%. The loser in our match next week and Mt. Carmel (if they win) will have the same winning percentage of 60%. I think the ITV match was a fluke and we would win if there is a playoff game.

Conclusion, if we lose next week, we still have a chance to make playoffs. But we should have a good chance to win. Carlsbad got more points against SDA and the scores against other teams are similar with the scores that we had against them. However, coming off a loss and a loss (unjustified) from last year, we should be motivated to win next week.

Rant 2:

I have 230 pages of reading from Jane Eyre. Mrs. Whalen is crazy sometimes. I think that she is unbalanced or has multiple personalities sometimes. One day it will seem like she wants to reduce homework as much as possible. Other times, it seems she has no regard for the amount that is assigned. Today, she told us that she is reading it with us and that if she could finish then we should be able to finish. Sounds logical from her side, but it has obvious flaws. She doesn't have homework from other classes. I don't even think she has anything that needs to be graded. Next, she has already read Jane Eyre many times. She just needs to skim through it really fast. Third, she wants us to take notes in the book. Taking notes in the book takes an insane amount of time even if it is only underlining because we have to find examples from each section of a page long list of motifs she gave us. Good thing the quiz can't cover every small detail thus allowing alternate ways of finding what happens.

End Rant.

Rant:

We (at TP Academic Team) just got our asses handed to us after they were kicked very badly. However, only the 5 starters got to play. After about halfway through the match, I think they started getting stressed out because we were behind and then, didn't play as well as we should. The coaches should have made some substitutions. Some people switched in because they would be fresh and less nervous. I'm not trying to tell the coaches what to do, but what they were doing wasn't working. Mrs. Dean even asked me if I wanted to be subbed in and I told her yes. This week, for some reason, I felt more awake than normal. Thus, my speed is greatly increased. I usually know the stuff but I'm too slow to buzz in and get it. I know that I haven't done a good job this year, but I do know that this week I was really on my game. Too bad I didn't have a chance to show it. I guess the only thing I can do is make sure that I get a lot of rest next week and hope that I get put in the game because we really need to win against Carlsbad.

End Rant.

My Dad sent this to me:

If we could shrink the earth's population to a village of precisely 100 people, with all the existing human ratios remaining the same, it would look something like the following:

There would be:

57 Asians
21 Europeans
14 from the Western Hemisphere, both north and south
8 Africans

52 would be female
48 would be male

70 would be non_white
30 would be white

70 would be non_Christian
30 would be Christian

6 people would possess 59% of the entire world's wealth and all 6 would be from the United States.

80 would live in substandard housing
70 would be unable to read
50 would suffer from malnutrition
1 would be near death; 1 would be near birth

1 (yes, only 1) would have a college education
1 would own a computer

When one considers our world from such a compressed perspective, the need for acceptance, understanding and education becomes glaringly apparent. The following is also something to ponder...

If you woke up this morning with more health than illness... you are more blessed than the million who will not survive this week.

If you have never experienced the danger of battle, the loneliness of imprisonment, the agony of torture, or the pangs of starvation ...you are ahead of 500 million people in the world.

If you can attend a church meeting without fear of harassment, arrest, torture, or death...you are more blessed than three billion people in the world.

If you have food in the refrigerator, clothes on your back, a roof overhead and a place to sleep...you are richer than 75% of this world.

If you have money in the bank, in your wallet, and spare change in a dish someplace ... you are among the top 8% of the worlds wealthy.

If your parents are still alive and still married, you are very rare.

If you can read this message, you just received a double blessing in that someone was thinking of you, and furthermore, you are more blessed than over two billion people in the world that cannot read at all.

Someone once said: What goes around comes around.

Work like you don't need the money.
Love like you've never been hurt.
Dance like nobody's watching.
Sing like nobody's listening.
Live like it's Heaven on Earth.

Smile, you are one of the fortunate!

Only 69 days of school left.

I just updated my madprofile. Last time I updated (like three months ago) it was 99 days of school left. High school is going to be over for me in 69 days. That's sort of scary but at the same time I wish I was there now.

Just got Science Olympiad State event assignments.

We have no chance to survive make our time. (Yeah, its sort of an old reference but its relevant.) These are my events:

Wright Stuff
Cell Biology
Dynamic Planet

Well, I've never done Dynamic. And my partner, Liz, hasn't done it either. There are people on state that have done it before. Why aren't they doing it? At least one team member should have done it before.

Furthur evidence that we will fail:
Some events, there is no one on state that has done it before like Robot Ramble. Also, people that did not do science olympiad before are on the team. Most of these same people beat out people who did better than them during regionals and have more experience than them. People with enough points based on their placings at regionals did not even make alternates (understandable if they are seniors but not if they are juniors or sophs). State teamers from last year like Michael Cheng didn't make the team even with two (supposed to be three but wright stuff got taken away even though we didn't cheat) medals. The person with the best scrambler at TP (that's me, i'm not being arrogant, just trying to make a point) is not doing scrambler and i still have my teams car.

The event assignments and the state team choices are biased. We have no chance to beat Troy this year. With the right team and correct event assignments, we had a chance this year. Now, I'm fairly certain that that Mt. Carmel and Valencia will beat us. We don't have other teams to outrank the other schools and thus give us much higher rankings. Even though we did, we tied at regionals. Mt. Carmel has a very good chance to beat us at state and so does Valencia because they were only a few points behind last year. This years team could have been one of the strongest ever but we aren't (we might be one of the weakest in recent years.)

Conclusion: Someone (who could it be?) set up us the loss.

Yesterday, we killed LCC in Academic Team. It was something like 125 to 25. We Rocked.

But, I didn't. I sucked. I sat there the whole time I was in and didn't buzz in. I didn't even start. I wasn't subbed in right away. In fact, I wasn't subbed in until the end. In any case, I didn't answer anything so it didn't matter. Three matches out of four without answering anything this year. I better start getting more sleep or something so I don't keep sucking or we're going to lose this year.
