Now, do these high school kids think we're cool because they're at a college party or are we those weird older guys that try to hang out with high school kids when we come home?
-American Pie 2

I had a good spring break. I was one of those "weird older guys." I went to Academic Team and Science Olympiad. That was good stuff. Jack in the Box with the old gang. Good times, good times. Apparently, Convoy boba joints are the new TP hangout though. Crazy underclassmen. Things change, I don't think I'm really going to go back to TP too much after this. It's definitely getting weird going back. Hmm, the first summer back is gonna be weird (if I go back that is). I guess it's the way it works. Every few years, schools turn over. They become different. It's not the TP I went to. Same with MIT. 4 year memory.

On business in Mexico, three men get drunk and wake up in jail to learn they will be executed, though none of them can recall what they did to deserve it.

The first man put in the electric chair is asked for his last words. "I'm from Yale Divinity School, and believe in the power of God to intervene on behalf of the innocent." The switch is thrown, but nothing happens. The jailers figure God wants the man alive and let him go.

The second man is strapped in. "I'm from Harvard Law School, and I believe in the power of justice to intervene on behalf of the innocent." The switch is thrown; again, nothing. The jailers think the law is on this man's side, so they let him go.

The last man says, "Well, I'm an electrical engineer from MIT, and you're not electrocuting anybody if you don't connect those two loose wires down there."

In other news, while my existence at MIT is joked about, worked to death, and somewhat buffered, this guy deserves a lot of respect.

6.001 took so long. (Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs, that is)

Guess why? Because it didn't work on my version of scheme, sort of. It just wouldn't work on my home computer. It didn't work at first at the lab. Then, strangely, without changing the code, it worked. Weird stuff. Weird stuff that I had to work on for 10-12 hours. This may not seem like a lot considering some people worked on it for so much longer than I did. But if you consider that it only took me 3-4 hours to write the entire rest of it including this code that worked but didn't. Then, it is a lot. Ok, time for shower and nap.

Just watched Hero.

Definitely one of the best movies I have ever seen. Martial arts movies done right end up being extraordinary movies not just extraordinary martial arts movies. This was even better though. If you liked Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, this is for you. It's much much better than Crouching Tiger. I watched it in Chinese. If you can, do so (sorry non-Chinese speakers, but the translation sucks, as it did with Crouching Tiger). Something was wrong with the DVD or the player or the projector, but it came out black and white. It was really good this way actually. The contrast of light and dark is much better, it looked authentic in a Kurosawa's Seven Samuria sort of way. I Iooked at the trailer for the US release in color just now. It makes it different. So I say, if you can set it on black and white, you should watch it that way. I don't want to say any spoilers, so I just want to say go watch it and learn the true meaning of hero.

Fun fact of the day:
John hasn't shaved for 2 weeks. And he looks really really scruffy. Stupid MIT, so much work I forget to do stuff like shave and sleep. Just kidding, I'm just a lazy ass procrastinator.

Fun fact of the day #2:
I got 5 more emails during the time I was checking my email today. Amazing. I now get something on the order of 40-50 emails a day because of all the mailing lists I'm on. I'm on mailing lists of organizations that I've never heard of which is quite a feat since the emails they're sending is for members.

In other news, the media page has been greatly updated. Check out the new songs and videos. Especially the Semiautomatic song and the Better Luck Tomorrow trailer. The song is from the movie and CSC is really promoting it and so am I. Go see it when it comes out in a few weeks. In response to Bush's war mongering, I have obtained these for your viewing pleasure: Bush pictures and Homeland Security.

The year of the resurrection of the CSC website is upon us.

As new historian, I'm foolishly guaranteeing that MIT CSC's site will become one of the best Chinese student organization site on the web. Yup, Peng, better than Cornell's. That's my part. Everyone else has the job of resurrecting the rest of CSC: membership, participation, culture, etc.

Blog revision project on hold for now.

In other news:
Until recently, it seemed that something would happen to me every day that I would deem journal-worthy and post it. But now it seems that either interesting stuff happens but I don't think to post it; I don't feel anything is interesting enough; or I think its interesting, write down a long passage, look it over, decide it sucks, and then delete it. Probably, MIT working me hard, me losing interest in my life, or something a la James, respectively.

Boston Open was pretty fun. Saw some amazing badminton. Men's doubles = crazy killing volleys.

In the final point of the last semifinal, one guy on the losing team kept killing the ball from backcourt and the other team kept recovering to the backcourt. At least 15 times. It was crazy. In the end they lost that point though with a return that caught the other player off guard.

Some amazing line judging too. From me, at least I was told by the supervisors. There was two calls that I made from shuttles close to the line that got crowd reaction. But I was right, confirmed by the other line judges. Amazingly, it takes 10 line judges and 2 umpires to call a game involving 2 people with racquets, a shuttle, and a net. Pro athletics are messed up.

I really want to get into playing again. And I'm definitely going to line judge this next year.

Oh man, this might be the longest time in between entries in a while.

I might be getting sick. I don't know. Some days I feel sort of sick and other days I feel fine. My immune system is weird.

This month has been hell month basically. February was pretty nice and easy. Then near the end it went crazy and I didn't sleep much. The next week I had a bunch of tests and it sucked. The the past week, I thought it was going to be pretty normal. Then, I kept finding out more and more stuff I had to do and it became hell week 3. Next week is going to be bad. I can tell because I have a test and a 6.001 project plus other stuff. 4 hell weeks = 1 hell month.

The lion dance showcase was great. 4 different school with really cool styles of lion dancing. Brown had really really exact coordination with their Singapore beat. It was fun to watch. They were the most different from the other teams. Columbia had some martial artists on the team. So they did more martial arts like style. They also really didn't like the Singapore beat for some reason. Brandeis was really good. They did a lot of stunts. They also had the lion pyramid that I thought of for our final pose. It was sort of lame, as if they added it when they saw us.

Personally, I think we did really well, even though we didn't know exactly what to expect. We probably had one of the shorter routines, since we didn't know how long the other ones were going to be. However, I think we had a good balance between set movements and freestyle as well as between story and stunts. We can definitely pick up some stunts from other teams. We're going to analyze the tapes like a sports team (which in fact we might become). I also feel that each of out lions was timed together well since we followed the beat for parts like that. I think we executed our stunts well. Actually, I know we did since I was in most of them.

I felt that Brown and Columbia who had two lions each, had one lion that was really good and the other was not nearly as good. This makes it sort of unbalanced. Brown also had their routine down to exact movements at exact times which may be good or bad. It looked pretty cool, but would be hard to change for future performances. Columbia had a lot of random stunts and showy parts that didn't seem to flow together other than moving into place for the next stunt. I think its good to have some kind of reason behind each part of the performance. Brandeis was definitely good. They also had sort of a story running most of the time. Near the end it looked like they were just doing things to look cool. They had the most stunts. However, one lion was definitely not up to the level of their other two. The tail stood with a really big hump in the back and while they could do the stunts it wasn't nearly as good as the other probably more experienced lions. They also seemed really arrogant. While good, they shouldn't act like no one can do better. They took a long time to set up each stunt. We both did a pyramid, which I feel like they added after seeing us practice, especially since the side lions lined up exactly like us. They also tried to get up on the shoulders but couldn't, a sign of no practice. Just getting up on the legs of the bases took them a while though. We get the top lion up right away almost. Our other stunts were also so well practiced that we could do them without delay. Without looking in fact, at least for me. The tail cloth obstructed my view for the lift that we run across the stage. I had to figure out where to end and I ended in the right spot, just before the audience. The pyramid, Sean and I have a hard time seeing Lauri step up through the heads, so we just do it blind. And we can hold him there for more than a few seconds.

So, I don't want to seem arrogant. I'm just analyzing about stuff we can do and what not to do. So here is some stuff we need to do. We need to learn a few more stunts. We can add things to our routine to make it longer. We are all pretty much on the same level skillwise but we can try to make all the lions exactly even. Also, people in the base have to learn to do a better job even though it is not as well recognized. No slacking. We should coordinate steps with the front lion. So when the front step a certain way, the bases see it and step a certain way as well. Everyone should learn the ground roll and add it in in more places. Everyone should learn to do the double leg stand. That means bases learn the squat and heads learn the jumb and stand. If we get harnesses we can learn a few more stunts, but I feel that it is not too traditional to do it that way. We should also learn to be more lively. Some people are better at this than others.

Alright, that's a lot to work on, plus more stuff I didn't mention. Too bad it's MIT, school of apathy. We really have year-round practice and everyone should try to make practices. Hopefully, it will be more motivating if we have sports status. One of the things that I feel makes a big difference is the dedication to the team and the togetherness of the team, which I feel the founding MIT teams had and some of the other schools teams had a lot of.

Diablo II is really messed up right now.

I have died more times in the last 2 games than I did since starting to play again. Things that didn't kill me when I was lower level kill me now. Its messed up. I was level 78 last week, now im 87. I could kill Baal without getting hit. At 87, I got killed. I also got killed by the suicide things, Lister, MSLE Bartuc, and Blood Lords, and succubi. If you ever played you can probably tell I was doing Baal runs. Since Baal can drop almost anything and I my machine is fast enough so no machine lag on my part. Something else weird as well, I got more uniques dropped from Baal and other high treasure class monsters when I was level 78 than I do now. Maybe there's a weird level 87 glitch, but I don't think so. Interesting note is that at level 80 or something, I had a streak of Baal runs without dying that was reaching 20 before I decided to do Cows again to level up. Now I have more life and defense and I still die. Another weird thing is that I got a bunch of items that also had life leech on them and my life leech is less than it was before. This is stupid, Blizzard possibly nerfed some stuff but no new patch so I don't think so and Blizz also deleted most of my chars even though I logged onto them the within 90 days and only some of my chars even though I logged them all at the same time. Maybe I should just level past 87 and see it stuff gets better.

What else pisses me off is that Guided Arrow has been missing lately. I don't get it. It's a Guided Arrow it can't miss monsters in most cases, usually only extra fast mod unique monsters. I will shoot at a normal monster, clicking him directly, not just letting it autolock, and it will go straight at the monster and not hit it. Other times I will click right next to a monster and the autolock won't work and it will just crash into a wall and disappear. It's retarded. I've died because arrows have gone through the suicide monsters and not killed them or will kill them but still damage me.

Ok, sorry all my recent posts have been complaining about unimportant things. Regularly scheduled postings will resume, I hope.

It's funny how many things you take for granted.

Last Thursday, I was running out of Baker because I was late for lion dance practice after having a dumb arguement with someone I knew in high school (see end of post). It just snowed that day and hadn't been cleared yet. So there was ice on the front steps and as I ran out the door, I slipped, flew in the air, and hit my ass on every step. Now, I have a four inch radius bruise on my butt. I also smashed my elbow and twisted a neck muscle. Now it hurts everytime I sit. That's a given, but I've discovered that I support my head with my arms a lot but now I can't because it hurts when my elbow touches the table. Even worse is that the neck muscle hurts when I turn my head a little and moving my right arm also hurts it.

So, this guy was one of the first people I met when I changed high schools freshman year. I didn't hang out with him that much. Some people thought he was annoying and didn't like him much, but I didn't really figure this out until now. I don't want to clutter my journal with it so it has a separate page. It may be removed later, if I get don't like it.

Don't ever read The Onion and then read a real news website. I kept thinking all the headlines were fake but they were real.

Guess which one the following article is from:

Cops finish lunch, grab rape suspect
SAN DIEGO--Talk about being at the right place at the right time. San Diego police sex-crimes investigators Carlton Hershman and Walter Escobar were having lunch at a downtown restaurant yesterday when they recognized the cook as a fugitive wanted on suspicion of raping a 15-year-old girl in City Heights last year. "My partner looks at me and says, 'Hey, look who's cooking!' " Hershman said. "So we did the right thing. We ate our lunch, paid our bill and then we arrested him." The cook, Eder Pedrotti, 19, of San Diego, was arrested without incident. "He was surprised all right," Hershman said. Pedrotti, who police say fled to Mexico for several months after raping the acquaintance, was booked yesterday afternoon. Bail was set at $500,000. Pedrotti, however, may have a career when he gets out of jail. "He's a pretty good cook," Hershman said.

If you paid attention you would have guess it was from my hometown newspaper, San Diego Union Tribune, from the two mentions of San Diego in the article. Otherwise, it reads just like an Onion article, especially the quotes.

Late bday shoutout:

Happy Birthday, Kaliq!

So Theater Hopper has become my favorite movie critic not to mention one of my favorite comics. I almost always agree with his opinions. And when he says a movie is good. I like it too. It's much like the PA of movies for me. I sort of keep up with video games through PA and a little through PvP. PvP has become different now. I'm considering moving it down from the top of the list in my links.

It's not really an official ranking and its quite hard to actually rank them. If you're curious about the order I'm about to explain for the first time ever (except for my little bro, he knows). If you are one of the esteemed artists of one of the comics on my list, be assured that everyone on my list is excellent. I have another huge secret list elsewhere of many comics. I slowly go through this list and add the ones I really like. So, even though my site is of little consequence, be assured that you met some high standards to get on my list.

Ok. The first ranking is based on update frequency. This is sort of harsh because some terrific comics only update rarely. It makes it much easier to read all the comics though. So the top of the list is daily comics. Most are M-F, some are everyday. Basically every think that does more than 3 times a week. Next are the regular schedule 2-3 times a week comics. Finally, are low frequency or incosistent update comics. The line between the last two is sort of blurry somtimes. Comics making the list but still under consideration are at the bottom too. Followed by a few comic listings and other art sites.

Then, they are ranked within each category. This is based on seniority, art, humor, story, and some mysterious "john"-factor that happens at the time I update the list. So PvP was the first webcomic I have ever read and has stayed at the top of the list. PA was the second. Both introduced to me by my friend Cremo. Real Life and Megatokyo are other early comics. These are good comics too that work in all the other categories and seniority (of when I know about them) makes the difference. It is possible to fall off the list. Avalon might even though it is an early comic. It was going well until the updates stopped and happen very rarely. BBoCS (Bad Boys of Computer Science) was another early comic, but updates stopped and the site is now gone. It was really good. One of the earliest existing webcomics. Important in introducing me to many more webcomics and permanently fixing me to them.

Blogger is a pain in the ass when it is down. I wrote a really long passage in my college blog and then I went to post and the Blogger server just died or something and I lost it all, spent time rewriting it in notepad for later. I thought Google bought Pyra, that was supposed to make servering much better. I was reconsidering my changing to direct HTML coding of my blogs. But now, I'm definitely changing. I might use greymatter since I think its more flexible and does certain automation if you want it to. But doing it directly which I am perfectly capable of is not that hard.

Sometime in the next few months, the Blogger button will dissappear. It will take time to convert all my entries. I might delete some. But I will have to redo all the internal links. Not good.

So, I watched The Bourne Identity a few months ago at LSC.

And the soundtrack was mostly electronica, so I enjoyed it. There was this one song that I really liked. Afterward, I downloaded a lot of Bourne Identity soundtrack songs, but none of them, while good, was the one that I wanted. Now I downloaded the movie and realized that the song was right under my computer equivalent of a nose and I already had it too. Paul Oakenfold - Ready, Steady, Go. It's a good song, get it.
